God is MERCIFUL to EXPOSE the spiritual INSECURITY of PRIDEFUL people.

God is PLEASED to do the IMPOSSIBLE through the PETITION of His PEOPLE for His GLORY.

The greatest DANGER for BABYLON is not living in IT PHYSICALLY, but its SUBTLE and SEDUCTIVE attempts to live in US SPIRITUALLY.
1 Corinthians 5:11
“Though we do not share all of the world’s conclusions, too often we think about everything in the same way and operate with the same value system— how many of us would rather die for the glory of God than live halfheartedly for Him in a measure of comfort?” — Sinclair Ferguson
The demonic kingdom of Babylon wants to cause Christians to forget God with a process of systematic reprogramming:
1. ISOLATING them.
Proverbs 18:1 // 1 Peter 5:8
2. INDOCTRINATING them.
Colossians 2:8 // Romans 12:2
3. RE-IDENTIFYING them.
1 John 3:2 // 2 Corinthians 5:20
4. INTOXICATING them.
Ephesians 5:18 // 1 Peter 1:13
Daniel’s example teaches us:
There is usually a way to COEXIST PEACEABLY in Babylon while DEYING it’s INFLUENCE at the HEART level BUT it takes WISDOM to DISCERN and then DETERMINATION to IMPLEMENT.
John 17:14-15 // Ephesians 5:7-10
While God does NOT promise to PROTECT us from EXPERIENCING SUFFERING, He does promise to PRESERVE and PROVIDE for us THROUGH it.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
We not only need FAITHFUL exilic EXAMPLES to follow, we need PERFECT FAITHFULNESS LIVED out FOR US.

BABYLON, though a REAL historical PLACE, becomes SYMBOLIC in scripture for ‘the KINGDOM of MEN’ who DESIRE to live OUTSIDE of the good and gracious RULE of GOD.

ISRAEL'S time in Babylonian CAPTIVITY is a TESTAMENT to the FACT that God is FAITHFUL to exact JUDGMENT on SIN as He has PROMISED.
Leviticus 26:14-17, 21-22, 33 // 2 Kings 20:12-18
The book of Daniel REVEALS that God is SOVEREIGNLY at work to be MERCIFUL to His people, EVEN amidst their SIN'S consequences.
Jeremiah 29:4-14 // Psalm 119:67, 75 // Hebrews 12:5-7 // Romans 11:25, 30-32
The good news in Old Testament terms is, for those who HUMBLY recognize and REPENT of their SINFUL AFFINITY for Babylon, there is ONE who TOOK the fullness of divine JUDGMENT they DESERVED and who will PRESERVE them throughout the time of their EXILE!
1 Peter 1:13, 17-19 // Jeremiah 23:5-8, 24:4-7
“God really loves us and wants us to turn away from our sins. If He passed final judgment now, we would have no such opportunity; that would be the end of time for us. He has sufficient provocation to do so; that we recognize. We have sinned enough to deserve His infinite wrath at any moment, but we do not receive it. We have an opportunity, therefore, to turn away from our sin and to turn to God. Instead of continuing to offend Him, we can plead for forgiveness and seek to please Him. The hope of the gospel is not only ‘INDIVIDUALISTIC’ in that Jesus came to save us from our sin, it is ‘COSMIC’- Jesus came to make ALL things new!

“Many Christians today think of salvation as leaving earth for heaven, but the story of Scripture is quite the opposite. The message of the kingdom of God is not an escape from earth to heaven but God’s reign coming down from heaven to earth. We live in light of Jesus’ Kingship not only by seeking to live in MORAL RIGHTEOUSNESS (the ETHICS of the Kingdom) but by living on MISSION (heralding the MESSAGE of the Kingdom!)

We need a Savior because:
Our SIN gets us hopelessly LOST, spiritually.
Romans 1:21-22, 28, 3:10-12 // Ephesians 2:1-3
In our sin, we don’t DESERVE to have FELLOWSHIP with God.
Ezekiel 18:4
Jesus is the perfect Savior because:
He PURSUES US when we are FAR from Him.
Luke 15:4-7
His MERCY and KINDNESS leads us to REPENTANCE.
Matthew 9:9-13
“If the death of Christ on the cross is the true meaning of the Incarnation, then there is no gospel without the cross. Christmas by itself is no gospel. The life of Christ is no gospel. Even the resurrection, important as it is in the total scheme of things, is no gospel by itself. For the good news is not just that God became man, nor that God has spoken to reveal a proper way of life for us, or even that death, the great enemy, is conquered. Rather, the good news is that sin has been dealt with (of which the resurrection is a proof); that Jesus has suffered its penalty for us as our representative, so that we might never have to suffer it; and that therefore all who believe in Him can look forward to heaven.” — James Montgomery Boice
Salvation looks like:
Genuine EFFORT given to SEEING Jesus, REGARDLESS of how PEOPLE may SEE us.
JOYFUL RECEPTION of Jesus into one’s life on HIS TERMS.
Intimate TIME SPENT with Jesus that leads to ongoing REPENTANCE and CHANGE.

When it comes to church leadership, CHARACTER is to be PRIORITIZED over COMPETENCY.
“We almost think it needs a better man to make a good deacon than a good minister. We who preach the word go first, and this pleases human nature; [but] grace is needed to make older, wealthier, and often wiser men go second and keep their place without envyings and bickering’s: thousands do this, and are to be honored for it.” — Charles Spurgeon
While scripture is clear that the role of ELDER is reserved for MEN; depending on the translation of a couple of key texts - WOMEN can *DEFINITELY MAYBE* fill the role of DEACON.
Romans 16:1 // 1 Timothy 3:11
Regardless of what Deacons DO, Deacons are to BE:
1. Self-CONTROLLED in their SPEECH, APPETITES and FINANCIAL dealings.
Ref. Ephesians 4:29, 5:5, 5:18
2. CLEAR in their UNDERSTANDING of the GOSPEL and in their COMMITMENT to SELFLESSLY SERVE the church.
1 Timothy 5:21-22, 24-25
3. FAITHFUL to LOVE and LEAD their FAMILIES well.

The primary need for ‘deacons’ is the need for EVERY BELIEVER to RECKON THEMSELVES a SERVANT of OTHERS, in Christ (especially within their church family!)

The Acts 6 Model:
1) The ‘official’ role of Deacon exists because there are TASKS CRITICAL to EFFECTIVE gospel MINISTRY to which Elders CANNOT afford to give their TIME and ENERGY.
1 Corinthians 12:14-18
2) Deacons are needed because the faithful ADMINISTRATION of the various MINISTRIES of the CHURCH is a role that often ENTAILS CARE and BUILDS UNITY.
3) Deacons are critical because without their fulfillment of the church’s PRACTICAL NEEDS, the very MISSION of the church may be HINDERED.
Romans 16:1-4,6,12
“A deacon’s work is often quiet but its effect is profound… There is an inseparable link between the labor of a deacon and the flourishing of the word. Public ministry is impossible without private service. Had the seven (in Acts 6) not freed the Apostle to focus on teaching and prayer, the gospel would not have spread.” — Matt Smethhurst
